The recent decision of the Asom Sahitya Sabha to tell people about the 175 year old monthly magazine Orunodoi (Sunrise) really is gratifying as it will give us a glimpse of what the world of journalism was in those days.
Mind you, an annual subscription to Orunodoi in 1846 was quite costly: one rupee per annum. That was not the time of paper currency. You could pay your annual subscription in coins issued by the British East India Company, or maybe, coins minted by the local maharajas and rajas of Assam.

I live half a world away from my parents. When I eat, I think of them. As I’m tucking into my dinner in Berlin, my parents are preparing their lunch in Calgary. The forced separation due to COVID-19 is a bit reminiscent of living away from home when I moved to Ottawa for university in the early 1990s. Home was a five-hour plane ride away and we didn’t have computers and video calls back in the day. Cross-country calling was expensive. I might as well have been in Berlin.

Around 2,000 people gathered in Nadia’s Plassey on Monday to raise their voice against the Centre’s citizenship matrix, the protest coming in the backdrop of Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to the state later this week and the growing demand among Matuas for the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act.
A large number of villagers cutting across political lines had formed the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Manch last year to hold continuous demonstration in Plassey’s Phulbagan against the CAA and express solidarity with the protest in New Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh.
The Phulbagan protest had to be withdrawn following the outbreak of Covid-19 last year. However, the protesters returned to the same place on Monday to iterate their demand of scrapping the CAA as well as the National Population Register (NPR).
