Opinion: An open letter from Aztec’s incoming schools superintendent Kevin Summers Dear Tiger Community,  I am honored and humbled to be selected by the Aztec Board of Education to be the next Learning Leader of Aztec Municipal School District. As a result of this selection, I want to introduce myself and assure you that the progress that has been made in the District will not be lost through this coming transition as Superintendent Carpenter and I collaborate.  I am originally from the Southwest corner of New Mexico –  the small, rural ranching community of Cliff. I am the son of a cattle rancher with a long family history of ranching and farming in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. 

Former Las Cruces High School alums launch successful audiobook company

LAS CRUCES – Two former Las Cruces High School and New Mexico State University students have joined forces to create an audiobook company they hope will revolutionize the medium. Relying on their differing educational backgrounds and skill sets, Luc Cadet and Alejandro Gonzales founded Abantu Audio, designed to showcase books by authors who are Black, Indigenous and persons of color or BIPOC authors. Cadet, who has degrees in management and computer information systems, came up with the idea after he was unable to find audiobooks about Black history. A Haitian refugee who migrated to the United States at age 3, he explained he wanted to learn more about his African roots.

NMSU Extension Service offers COVID-19 vaccine webinars Learn more through vaccine education Tiffany Acosta LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service and New Mexico Department of Health will host webinars about COVID-19 vaccine education April 13 and April 14. The free, one-hour event will begin at 6 p.m. on Zoom. The webinars will feature Kathryn Hanley, NMSU Regents professor of biology, and topics will include the science behind COVID-19 vaccination development; science behind vaccinations in controlling COVID-19 spread; and efficacy of available vaccines in preventing COVID-19 hospitalization and death in clinical trials. A public interest question and answer session also will be part of the presentation.
