New animal sciences department head joins Purdue Agriculture leadership team John Blanton
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Karen Plaut, the Glenn W. Sample Dean of Purdue Agriculture, has announced that John Blanton has accepted the position of head of the Department of Animal Sciences. He assumes his position effective Monday (Feb. 1).
“Dr. Blanton brings a breadth of experience and proven leadership excellence to the department,” Plaut said. “He comes to us from Mississippi State University, where he has served as professor and department head since 2013. He has built strong relationships with industry and stakeholders throughout his career. He is a results-oriented, energetic leader who knows how to move things forward.”
New Mexico State University academic programs, scholarships and STEM programs in southeastern New Mexico have received support from a generous donation from Chevrons Mid Continent Business Unit. A gift from Chevron is providing support for academic programs and scholarships at New Mexico State University Carlsbad and STEM programs in southeastern New Mexico. At NMSU Carlsbad, the $50,000 gift will provide critical funding for the newly developed remotely delivered associate degree in chemical engineering, and will continue support of the Chevron Workforce Development Scholarship. The gift also will help support NM Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology Robotics programs at middle schools and high schools in Eddy and Lea Counties.
Kellie Mixon (New Mexico Mutual)
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. New Mexico Mutual has selected its next chief executive officer, appointing a woman to the role for the first time.
Kellie Mixon is from Los Alamos and received her Bachelor of Accounting degree from New Mexico State University. She has been with the workers’ compensation insurance company for 25 years, starting as an accounting trainee and working her way up, according to a news release. She is the first team member to climb the ranks to the company’s top position.
Mixon is currently the vice president and chief financial office of the company, but she will take over for CEO Norm Becker when he retires at the end of March.

Nearly one quarter of New Mexico s population has registered to receive a COVID-19 vaccination, but officials at some of the state s largest health care providers said Monday that inconsistencies with the supply chain are among the barriers to getting more shots in arms.
More than half a million residents have registered on New Mexico s vaccine website. Health officials have been urging people to be patient as the focus shifts from vaccinating front-line health care workers, first responders and those at long-term care facilities to senior citizens. Those with chronic illnesses that put them at higher risk also are on the list.
The Gila County Provisional Community College District Governing Board announced recently the election of Jan Brocker as board president, Samuel Moorhead as vice president, Connie Cockrell as secretary, and Kurt Knauss as treasurer and chief financial officer.
Brocker succeeds Jay Spehar who stepped down from the position earlier this month, and Moorhead replaces Brocker as vice president.
Cockrell and Knauss were elected to newly formed positions. Fernando Shipley was welcomed to the seat vacated by Spehar. Shipleyâs appointment extends through Dec. 31, 2022; the remaining four years of Speharâs vacated term will be filled by the successful candidate in the November 2022 election.
