Albuquerque has some very important visitors today. And although the visit by representatives of the U.S. Air Force and Space Force is unfortunately limited to a virtual tour due to the pandemic, the visit has the potential of changing the landscape of the Duke City and New Mexico for the better for a hundred years or more.
Albuquerque is on the short list of six cities being considered to permanently host the new headquarters for U.S. Space Command. And the stakes are high.
The new Space Command is expected to bring more than a thousand civilian and military jobs to the selected city, with potentially billions of dollars of economic activity for the region and untold private-sector contracts. Space Command is now temporarily at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. WE SET OUT TO ASK A FEW NEW MEXICANS HOW THEY IDENTIFY. I ACTUALLY IDENTIFY AS MEXICAN. IDENTIFY MYSELF AS HISPANIC. I HAVE ALWAYS IDENTIFIED AS MEXICAN-AMERICAN. ONE ETHNIC GROUP IN A MYRIAD OF TERMS. IT’S IMPORTANT RECOGNIZE MY PARENTS BACKGROUND. HISPANIC IS MORE GENERIC. I THINK WE ARE REFRAMING HOW WE IDENTIFY. HISPANICS AND LATINOS ARE THE FASTEST GROWING ETHNIC GROUP IN THE UNITED STATES. THERE IS A DIVERSITY OF TERMS BECAUSE THERE IS A DIVERSITY OF PEOPLE AND EXPERIENCES. WHICH IS WHY ONE PERSON MIGHT CHOOSE TO USE HISPANIC OVER LATINO OR CHICANO OVER MEXICAN. WE
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, New Mexico State University faced many unprecedented challenges. While a few factors remain uncertain, a new partnership has created several positive outcomes, along with future opportunities that will help faculty and students involved in research. Volunteers conduct COVID-19 testing for a random sample study by a group of New Mexico State University interdisciplinary researchers seeking to understand the prevalence of the virus in the campus community. The tests were processed at the NMSU TriCore branch lab as part of a partnership with Albuquerque-based TriCore Reference Laboratories. New Mexico State University and Estas Manos Coffee Roasters have launched A Mountain Roast, the latest in NMSUs growing line of collegiate-licensed products. Estas Manos, a grass-roots business based in San Francisco, California, has New Mexico roots and is currently operating in Las Cruces. A portion of the proceeds will support NMSUs more than 400 student-athletes. A Mountain Roast will be available for purchase online, at Estas Manos popup locations, and at retailers around Las Cruces beginning Dec. 22. A special product launch will take place the same day from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Spirit Winds in Las Cruces.
