Sol Arker, affordable housing pioneer, dies at 73

Sol Arker, who embraced affordable housing as the head of the Arker Companies, died Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 73.
Working alongside his father, Arker began acquiring affordable housing assets in 1989. Over time, the company amassed more than 10,000 affordable units across New York City.
“The city has lost a visionary leader and tireless advocate for affordable housing, Sol Arker,” said Vicki Been, New York City’s deputy mayor for housing and economic development, said in a statement. “The residents of the many communities he built across the city have better lives because of his dedication.”

NEW YORK, New York (WBRC) - A Calera woman was arrested and charged with several counts after prosecutors said she committed welfare fraud and stole more than $120,000 in welfare and housing benefits in New York.
New York State Inspector General Letizia Tagliafierro said 57-year-old Latonja Serling allegedly collected nearly $70,000 in welfare benefits in New York State by misreporting her residency, employment and marriage status and using two different Social Security numbers. Prosecutors said she also misrepresented her residence to obtain New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) rental benefits in excess of $50,000.
