Abraham Lincoln s Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recording included in exhibition The Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation - Page 4. ALBANY, NY .- The New York State Museum and the New York State Writers Institute have partnered to bring the First Step to Freedom exhibit to the University at Albany campus in honor of Black History Month, State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced today. The historically remarkable exhibit includes a display of the only surviving version of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation in President Abraham Lincoln’s handwriting. The First Step to Freedom also includes the only known audio recording of a speech written and delivered by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in New York City in September 1962 for the Proclamation’s centennial. The exhibit opened, appropriately, on President’s Day and will be open to UAlbany students, faculty and staff through March 15.

Plant studio opens in downtown Troy

TROY, N.Y. — A new business specializing in potted plants has opened in downtown Troy. All plants at Butterfly Plant Studio are hand-selected for quality, thoughtfully planted in a variety of stylish pots, and carefully maintained at the studio. Some are small and can fit on a desk, while others reach the ceiling. Plant varieties include fiddle fig leaf, African mask (alocasia polly), philodendron Swiss cheese, philodendron monstera, banana leaf, snake plant, palm sago, bird’s nest (sansevieria), and ponytail palm among many others. Larger plants include peace lilies and dracaena. “There are so many benefits to having plants at home or in the office, which for a lot of people is the same place these days,” Studio Curator Angela Kanaan said.

New York State Museum Celebrates Black History Month

New York State Museum Celebrates Black History Month The New York State Museum is offering virtual presentations to celebrate Black History Month. Even though we are in the midst of a historic pandemic, Black History Month presentations must still go on and the New York State Museum is stepping up to make it happen. According to NYSM, The museum has announced that they are offering teachers and the general public educational resources to gain information about African Americans who have made their mark on history. Great Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr. will certainly be acknowledged during the virtual presentations with his address to the New York State Civil War Centennial Commission. The museum will also feature great women such as Sojourner Truth and Shirley Chisholm.
