On Thursday, the
New York Post reported that one of Cuomo s top aides, Melissa DeRosa, privately apologized to Democratic lawmakers this week for underreporting coronavirus death tolls after being asked for information last summer by the Trump administration s Department of Justice (DOJ).
During the conversation, DeRosa said, the governor s office basically froze out of fears that reporting the correct numbers could be used against the Cuomo administration by Trump and federal prosecutors.
At the same time as the DOJ request, the New York Legislature was seeking similar information from the governor s office.

ALBANY The state Health Department’s sluggish release of COVID-19 nursing home data came to a head Thursday night after it was revealed that a top aide to the governor admitted to withholding the total number of virus deaths in state facilities.
Lawmakers continue to be at odds after the department publishing additional death figures Wednesday night in response to a court order and advocates increased demand for an investigation with subpoena power into the state’s handling of the crisis in congregate facilities.

Top New York lawmakers are demanding justice following the revelation from an aide that the governor’s office deliberately held data related to nursing home coronavirus deaths to protect Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) from public criticism and shield the administration from a possible federal investigation.
Melissa DeRosa, New York’s secretary to the governor, confirmed the suspected coverup of coronavirus-related fatalities in New York nursing homes and long-term care facilities in a private phone call with Democrat lawmakers, in which she apologized and said officials “froze” out of fear of a federal investigation. The fear coincided with remarks from former President Trump, who at the time put pressure on blue state governors over their handling of the Chinese coronavirus and the number of related fatalities occurring in their nursing homes. This prompted Cuomo’s administration to suppress the data out of fear it would be “used against” them.
