The European Commission s future Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy must reflect the ambitions expressed by the territories to implement the Green Deal. The importance of cross-border links, the internalisation of external costs and more particularly the polluter pays principle, the place of public transport in our cities and countryside, the importance of everyday mobility and the modal shift from road and air transport to rail are all subjects on which we need to be heard. The European Commission will not achieve its objectives without us! . The Mayor of Seville Juan Espadas, will present the progresses of the Green Deal Going Local working group at the next COTER meeting on 26 February 2021.

On 3 February, at the closing session of the “Portugal Railway Summit 2021” conference, organised by the PFP - Portuguese Railway Platform Cluster - under the scope of the European Year of Rail and the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, Pedro Nuno Santos, made it clear that the goals of the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, presented recently by the European Commission, will only be possible with “public investment”.
The Minister for Infrastructure and Housing recalled that rail is a major priority of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the transport area and pointed out that this is “the right time to open up wide-reaching political discussion on the future of rail in Europe”.
Europe aspires to achieve carbon-neutrality by 2050, and we believe that for the transport sector this will be possible with a mix of solutions including electric vehicles, carbon neutral liquid fuels, hybrid options as well as e-/bio-based fuel ethers.
