To be sure, May 17 isn’t the deadline all across the country. There are some exceptions. Victims of the February winter storms in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana have until June 15 to file their 2020 federal returns and pay any tax due.
The IRS also extended the federal deadline in parts of Tennessee and Alabama to Aug. 2 for victims of storms. Some individuals in parts of Kentucky that were affected by flooding have until June 30.
For those who need to file by Monday, here are some last minute tips:
1. File on time. If you can’t, get an extension.
It s important to file on time or get an extension up to Oct. 15 so you don t get hit with a late filing and/or a late payment fee. But filing an extension when you owe taxes only gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. That means your payment is still due at the tax filing deadline.

OCALA, Fla. (WCJB) - Law enforcement officers and families across Marion County were all here to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Amazing Grace was sung as the Fallen Officers Memorial ceremony honored those who made the ultimate sacrifice and for one officer Connor Tuck this meant remembering his great grandfather.
“Walking in the door of the police department every day I see his plaque and it’s just that I’m extending his legacy. I’m living through his legacy and I’m honored to serve the police department that he served and to serve the community that he died for,” said Ocala Police Sgt. Tuck.
Ashley Moody s remarks on fallen officers
Before introducing Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, McQuaig told the audience that Moody is a strong ally of law enforcement.
In her remarks, Moody said it has been a tough year for law enforcement officials across the country. In Florida, this time last year, four law enforcement officials had died in the line of duty. So far this year, it s 12.
Moody said while these occasions can be sad, they also can be inspiring. She said the men and women who put on a uniform serve with pride and vigor, knowing the risk they face. During the pandemic, Moody said, they have showed up because they love their communities.
