It s 2021, But Women Runners Still Experience Regular Sexual Harassment

Matthew Leete via Getty Images One in four women are subjected to regular sexual harassment when they go running, while 60% have suffered physical or verbal abuse at some point during a run. That’s according to a survey of more than 2,000 amateur female runners from across the UK, conducted by Runner’s World and Women’s Health. To be honest, I’m surprised the figure isn’t higher. I’ve been harassed while running more times than I can recall, but a couple of occasions stand out – like the time a group of grown men in a van slowed to match my pace, just so they could shout comments about my arse and ask if I enjoyed anal sex. Then there was my run when a boy of only 13 or 14 followed me on his bike, calling me all names under the sun – bitch, c nt, bitch again – while his mates fell about in hysterics. They learn this behaviour young.
