The Paintsville Police Dept. and the Johnson Co Sheriff’s Office were recently involved in a chase with a local man along US 23 on an alleged stolen side-by-side. The incident happened just after midnight on Saturday, June 5 when Paintsville Police and the Johnson Co Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a man who had knocked down a gate at YPK Motor Sports in Paintsville and then fled the scene toward US 23 on a side-by-side. Police would catch up with the vehicle on US 23 and pursued it to Williams Branch, where it veered off the road and up a hill into the woods. Officers and Deputies would pursue the man on foot, when the vehicle turned around and headed into their direction. One of the Officer’s managed to use his taser on the driver and stop the chase. The driver was identified as 31 year-old Ryan Selvage of Paintsville. Selvage was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief (1

A man and woman was arrested early Saturday morning in Lawrence Co, after they lead Police on a chase that allegedly lasted over an hour. According to reports, shortly after 3 AM, a Louisa Police Officer attempted to pull over a car driven by Steven Ray Messer, 40, of Fort Gay, W.Va. on a routine traffic stop. Messer refused to pull over and for the next hour and 11 minutes, Messer would lead Police along Route 32, Route 201, Route 1, Route 3 and finally onto Cottonwood Drive before coming to a stop. Once the car was stopped, Police found multiple drug-related items, including a bag of meth. Messer and his female passenger, identified as Ryan Marcum, 35, of Warfield, were both arrested on charges related to the chase and the drugs, as well as a number of traffic violations. They were lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
