Wednesday will go down as one of the darkest days in American history.
It was all egged on by a sitting president, who has been unable to accept losing his bid for reelection and who persuaded millions of his followers to buy into baseless, debunked and disproved conspiracy theories.
The result: A mob violently storming and occupying the U.S. Capitol for hours, while staffers and lawmakers were evacuated or hid in fear. The sitting U.S. vice president was also rushed from the floor of the Senate and taken to a secure location after criticisms were tweeted from his boss.

In a remarkable speech from the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Mitch castigated his fellow Republicans who challenged Arizona’s election results, arguing they were subverting the Constitution by attempting to overturn the election results.
“I’ve served 36 years in the Senate. This will be the most important vote I’ve ever cast,” McConnell said. “The voters, the courts and the states have all spoken. They’ve all spoken. If we overrule them, it will damage our republic forever.”
Lawmakers met Wednesday in a joint session of Congress to count the votes of the Electoral College and confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. McConnell added that Congress will continue the certification process despite the failed insurrection attempt. The United States and the United States Congress have faced down much greater threats than the unhinged crowd we saw today. We have never been deterred before, and we will be not deterred today. They try to disrupt our democracy, they failed. They failed. They failed to attempt to obstruct Congress. This failed insurrection only underscores how crucial the task before us i
Because Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will serve as the tiebreaker in her role as President of the Senate, it means Democrats will have the advantage in the Senate. They will also hold the White House and the majority in the House of Representatives.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, said this week that $2,000 checks would be among the first items on the legislative agenda. Schumer wouldn t say whether the $2,000 stimulus checks would be a narrow bill, like the House passed, or part of a larger stimulus package.
Normally, 60 votes are generally needed in the Senate to pass a bill. But there are special budgetary rules where a bill only needs a simple majority. Even if Democrats were to pursue that route, with Manchin s opposition Democrats would need to convince some Republicans to vote for the $2,000 proposal.
