(RNS) Whenever there is trouble in Israel or the West Bank as there is now in Israel’s recent attacks on Muslim worshippers at Al-Aqsa, the third-holiest mosque in Islam politicians, pundits and international officials, in their routine way of attempting to lower tensions, call on the leaders on all sides to denounce violence.
But when it comes to Jerusalem, there are no leaders left on any side but the Israeli side.
Since the 1993 Oslo Accords, Israel has denied the Palestinian Liberation Organization, based in Ramallah, any engagement with the 350,000 Palestinians who live in East Jerusalem. Any discussion between the PLO leaders in Ramallah and their brothers and sisters in East Jerusalem has been systematically and often forcefully shut down by Israel.
Senegalese revolutionary icon Omar Blondin Diop deserves justice | Senegal
On May 11, 1973, Senegalese revolutionary activist Omar Blondin Diop was pronounced dead in a prison on Gorée Island off the coast of the Senegalese capital Dakar. His tragic life and death have continued to be a powerful symbol of Senegal’s revolutionary struggle.
Today, his image appears prominently in protests against the government and against neocolonialism. On March 2, 2021, just hours before the arrest of Senegalese opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, the Front Against the People’s Imperialist Revolution and the Pan-African Africa (FRAPP), a major youth protest organization, held a press conference against the mobilization project [opposition] entrepreneurs ”in Senegal. Diop’s portrait stood out behind the press loudspeakers.

It was the summer of 2002, and I’d been learning for a month in the beginners’ program of a kiruv yeshivah in Jerusalem. The content was interesting, but I wasn’t yet sold on Torah Judaism. Then I found myself at the Kosel Plaza at the close of Tishah B’Av, wedged among thousands of Jews praying and singing. Suddenly, I felt overwhelmed by a profound sense of clarity and connection.
