Most Cardiac Complications From MIS-C Resolve Within Months

July 15, 2021 The majority of cardiac complications seen in pediatric patients who develop multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 appear to resolve within a few months, researchers say. Their series, published online today in Pediatrics, represents the largest, single-hospital-system cohort addressing midterm outcomes for a troubling new disease that produced shock waves earlier in the pandemic, particularly since MIS-C in many of the children was the first indication that they’d ever been infected with SARS-CoV-2. The syndrome came on the radar of cardiologists after the constellation of symptoms was described as “Kawasaki-like,” with implications for coronary artery aneurysms or ectasia, ischemic heart disease, and sudden death.

ISAR-REACT 5: Subanalysis of PCI Patients Confirms Prasugrel Superiority

July 01, 2021 Among patients with ACS who undergo PCI, a prasugrel-based strategy is superior to one using ticagrelor in terms of all-cause death, MI, and stroke at 12 months, according to a prespecified subanalysis of the ISAR-REACT 5 trial. Researchers here had narrowed their focus to only patients who actually were treated with PCI after being randomized to prasugrel versus ticagrelor representing 84.4% of study participants. While the initial findings of ISAR-REACT 5, as reported by TCTMD in 2019, were a surprise to the investigators, who had hypothesized that ticagrelor would hold an advantage. Prior evidence had shown increased bleeding associated with prasugrel, but this was not shown to be the case in ISAR-REACT 5, and, subsequently, the 2020 European Society of Cardiology guidelines for NSTE ACS were updated to back a prasugrel-based strategy.

A renowned surgeon almost died from Covid-19. Here s what he learned facing the reality of death. In March 2020, Tomoaki Kato, surgical director of adult and pediatric liver and intestinal transplantation at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center and seven-time marathoner, nearly died from Covid-19 an ordeal that has transformed how he interacts with his patients, Denise Grady reports for the New York Times. I thought I was going to be fine At age 56, Kato was exceptionally fit, Grady reports. He had run the New York City Marathon seven times, and he specialized in operations that often lasted between 12 and 20 hours. I never got sick, Kato said. I had never faced the reality of death.
