Complaints on the rise over extra fees for using credit cards

January 22, 2021 226 STATE The state has seen an increase in complaints about businesses charging an extra fee for using a credit card, according to the Department of Consumer Protection. A business may offer a discount if a customer chooses to use one type of payment, such as cash, over another, such as a credit card. Receiving a discount for paying in cash is allowed. However, charging a surcharge, or “convenience fee,” for using a credit card is prohibited by state law. “Consumers may not realize they cannot be charged extra simply for using their credit card,” Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull said. “But it’s important to watch out for these unlawful charges and avoid paying them before it’s too late.”

(Patch graphic) HAMDEN, CT A Hamden cafe s liquor license was suspended after about 180 people were found packed inside late Friday night in violation of the state s coronavirus regulations, according to officials. Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull on Thursday issued a summary suspension of the liquor permit for Café Studio 1537, located at 1537 Dixwell Avenue in Hamden. Café Studio 1537 hosted a large private gathering Dec. 4, according to Seagull. Hamden police were dispatched to the cafe after receiving a complaint that the business was over capacity. Arriving officers a crowded dance floor with about 150 people, many who weren t wearing masks, according to officials.
