The Union government has paid Rs 1,364 crore to 20.48 lakh ineligible beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, or PM-KISAN scheme till July 2020, PTI reported on Monday, quoting the Union agriculture ministry’s reply to a Right to Information query.

It has recently emerged that large numbers of ineligible people have been receiving cash benefits meant for farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme in Uttar Pradesh. These incidents have taken place for a variety of reasons, including outright fraud and errors by officials in depositing the money in the wrong accounts. The PM-Kisan scheme disburses Rs 6,000 to eligible farmers each year in three instalments.
In Uttar Pradesh’s western district of Moradabad, the state agriculture department has issued notices to more than 100 people who have wrongfully benefited. So far, 14 people have returned the money voluntarily. For instance, Priti Sharma, a resident of Moradabad’s Line Par area, received Rs 10,000 under the scheme. As the clock ticks down to Budget 2021-22, even as the farmers’ agitation continues, with no sign of end to the impasse between incensed farmers and a determined Centre, one thing is clear. Unlike in the past, when agriculture often got no more than lip service, this time round, Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman will take care to ensure the Budget sends the right message: that this is a government that cares for farmers and farmer welfare.
