MUMBAI: Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday said Maha Vikas Aghadi government will take back cases filed against people under section 188 of Indian Penal Code (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) for disobeying orders issued during lockdown.
He said that due process will be followed while cases are taken back. Senior officials said during lockdown in the state over a lakh cases were filed for violation of section 188 against people caught by police on streets.
Deshmukh was speaking after meeting a delegation of NCP office-bearers who said many people were caught on streets during lockdown and are now being sent notices under section 188, and cases will be filed against them. The delegation demanded that most cases were of people out on streets for genuine reasons and the home department should take a humanitarian view and take back the cases.

NASHIK: Maharashtra state election commissioner U P S Madan has ordered the cancellation of the elections in Umrane village in Nashik district and Khondamali village in Nandurbar district following the allegations of the sarpanch and gram panchayat members posts being auctioned here.
The decision to cancel the polls in both the villages was announced by Madan in a press release issued by the state election commission office in Mumbai.
Quoting Madan, the press release read: “There were media reports about the auction of seats of sarpanch (head man) and members of the gram panchayat of Umrane and Khondamali. The reports from the tehsildar, sub-divisional officer, election observer and the collectors were sought. And after verification of the complaints, reports and audio-visual media reports, the decision to cancel the process was taken.”

NAVI MUMBAI: A 90-year-old woman was raped by a labourer in Dapoli, Ratnagiri last month. The daughter-in-law of the victim lodged a police complaint on Friday.
The victim was raped on December 19, 2020 by Soham Bhil, the 33-year-old accused, but she did not reveal about the incident to anyone fearing the accused would harm her.
“The nonagenarian was staying alone in Hatip village at Dapoli. Her son and daughter-in-law are based in Mumbai. After the incident, the woman did not reveal anything for several days to anyone out of fear that the accused may harm her,” said Dapoli police assistant inspector, Pooja Hiremath.
