Gladstone’s push to be at the pinnacle of the global renewable hydrogen industry continues to solidify with news the city will be one of five ‘hubs’ in the Federal Government’s $539.2 million clean hydrogen and carbon capture technologies program.
The port city’s skilled workforce, port and gas infrastructure, proximity to energy resources and large scale industrial demand factors resulted in Gladstone being listed as a ‘highly prospective’ hub location.
The announcement follows the progressive development of Hydrogen Park Gladstone and the March agreement between Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, and multiple local and national partners, to develop the world’s first hydrogen ecosystem at Gladstone.

Two Central Queensland politicians have traded verbal barbs over the Federal Governmentâs latest hydrogen announcement.
It detailed Gladstone as one of five âhubsâ in the Federal Governmentâs $539.2 million clean hydrogen and carbon capture technologies program.
But, Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher was unimpressed by the announcement, stating it was another flash in the pan that aimed to take credit for the work of others.
âI would say that thereâs fashionably late, and then thereâs ScoMoâs move to finally recognise our potential for hydrogen,â Mr Butcher said.
âItâs the Palaszczuk Government that implemented a strategy two years ago, has already opened two rounds of the industry development fund, and set up a Queensland Hydrogen Task force full of the industryâs best.â

One of the region’s hallmark events has been given a cash boost by the Queensland Government in recognition of its positive effect on tourism.
The State Government’s Queensland Destination Events Program (QDEP) is investing
$20,000 in the Boyne Tannum HookUp.
Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher said the Gladstone region was the greatest place to live, work, and fish in Australia.
