Buffalo Public Schools provide update on Phase III and Phase IV of reopening

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) â Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash provided an update on Phase III and Phase IV of reopening Thursday.
In a letter to board members and the BPS community, Cash said:
Covid-19 infections are rising again across the region, a more contagious variant is spreading, and we are working to recover from a malicious cyberattack. Those significant challenges notwithstanding, I have directed staff to bring back all remaining high school opt-in students on April 26th. Remaining elementary opt-in students will come back on May 10th. We will discuss further details at our April 14th Board Work Session and defer to updated recommendations from our Medical Director and local health experts.

According to a BPS spokesperson, staff has restored the functionality of equipment, systems, and applications in the majority of our buildings over the weekend and today. 54 of 67 locations report no disruption to internet and wireless systems as of this afternoon.
Officials say students will remain at home Tuesday and each school will send a message regarding when to log on for office hours, to learn the new log on process and participate in asynchronous learning. Wednesday will be a full day of remote learning.
Higher educational institutions in WNY to receive $173 million in American Rescue Plan funding
More than $93 million will be allocated for the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State College

Universities and higher education institutions across Erie and Niagara counties can expect to receive $172.7 million dollars as part of the American Rescue Plan.
According to a release from Congressman Brian Higgins, at least half of that money will need to be dedicated directly to students for emergency financial aid to help prevent hunger, homelessness, or other hardships.

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WKBW) â A ninth grader from Williamsville South was a big winner in a documentary contest conducted by C-SPAN!
Theo Poulin won the grand prize of $5,000 in the 2021 C-SPAN StudentCam Competition for his documentary âTrust Fall.â
Theo s documentary was one of over 2,300 films submitted during this year s competition where the theme was, âExplore the issues you want the president and new Congress to address in 2021.â Trust Fall, will air nationally on C-SPAN on April 21st.

West Seneca kindergartners, first graders moving to in-person learning four days a week

WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WKBW) â The West Seneca Central School District is bringing some of their youngest students back to the classroom.
In a letter sent to parents and guardians in the district, Superintendent Matthew Bystrak says all kindergartners and first graders in the hybrid learning program will move to in-person learning four days a week beginning on March 22. The district says Wednesday will remain a virtual learning day.
Students who are remaining fully remote will be assigned new teachers. Fully remote students whose families would like to return to in-person learning can request to do so through the student s principal. The district says decisions will depend on the availability of space.
