Dog and cat food recalled over Aflatoxin risk Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc., of Evansville, IN is issuing a voluntary recall of the below listed dog and cat food products due to tests indicating levels of Aflatoxin that exceed acceptable limits. Products were distributed nationally to online distributors and retail stores. Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold  Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets. There have been reports of illnesses and deaths in dogs associated with the below listed lots of Sportmix High Energy. No cat or human illnesses have been reported.

Certain Sportmix pet food products are being linked to the death of at least 28 dogs and at least 8 more becoming ill according to FOX news. The Missouri Department of Agriculture tested many samples of the food and found high levels of toxicity. Pets that have been poisoned by the toxin may seem sluggish and have a loss of appetite. They may also experience vomiting, jaundice (yellowish tint to the eyes or gums due to liver damage) and/or diarrhea,

Midwestern Pet Foods Recalls Certain Pet Food Products Due To Potentially Fatal Levels Of Toxin WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. has recalled certain lots of Sportmix pet food products that may contain potentially fatal levels of toxin aflatoxin that has been linked to the deaths of dozens of dogs. Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets. The pet food company has recalled nine lots of Sportmix pet food products. Lot code information may be found on the back of bag and will appear in a three-line code, with the top line in format EXP 03/03/22/05/L#/B###/HH:MM , the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in its website.
