Stop hunting bobcats in Illinois

Adobe stock Five years ago, Illinois lawmakers trotted out a lot of ridiculous arguments to justify ending protections for bobcats that had been in place for 44 years. They called the elusive animals, which have never been known to kill a single person, ferocious. They compared them to saber-toothed tigers. They conjured up unsubstantiated stories of bobcats raiding chickens and killing pet cats on farms. The Legislature voted, by a razor-thin margin, to create an Illinois bobcat hunting season. This year’s season ended on Feb. 15. Since bobcat hunting has resumed, more than 1,500 bobcats have been killed in Illinois, the Humane Society of the United States says. Before that, bobcats, which had been on the state’s threatened species list, had barely managed to recover from being overhunted in the past. Bobcat hunting remains illegal in Chicago and the northeast portion of the state.

FREDDIE PURRCURY : Parkdale man launches catnip dispensary

Article content White began collecting different strains from all over the world as well as catnip from various plants from around Toronto while he went on hikes. He used friends’ kitties as volunteers to test out the different strains and got them to film their animals’ reactions. According to the Humane Society of the United States, Nepetalactone, “the essential oil in catnip, can turn even the laziest couch potato into a crazy furball if said furball happens to have inherited the sensitivity to its effects. The trait doesn’t emerge until a cat is between three and six months old; until then, a kitten will not have a response. Catnip sensitivity is hereditary an estimated 50% of cats have no reaction.”

The measure was introduced by City Councilor Marie T. Harpin in October but was put on hold as the attorney general s office reviewed similar bylaws and ordinances passed last year to see if they conflicted with state language. The ordinance had gendered significant support but the General Government Committee had wanted to wait to ensure it would not have to be amended.
