RICHMOND, Va. – April is Autism Awareness Month, and a Virginia author is shedding some light on the diagnosis in a new children’s book.
Richmond Writer Lindsey Rowe Parker released her first children’s book after her daughter was diagnosed as autistic.
Parker said the theme of the book is acceptance and having an understanding of those with sensory differences.
She added that the story is not just for children who are autistic and that children who aren’t diagnosed with autism could still learn a lot from the book.

âIn recognition of April being Autism Awareness Month, Jess created âMystic.â
âA common symbol for autism is a puzzle piece. Notice Jessâ painting, which includes subtle representations of autism by inserting small puzzle pieces into her artwork.
âSheila Biggs, Jessâ mother, said Jess is not autistic, however, she does have siblings of friends who are. âSheâs always been very empathetic toward autistic people,â she said.
âHer piece is called Mystic because Mystic has a special gift to understand autistic people. Biggs said the hardest thing for autistic people is to communicate to others what they are thinking inside.
âJess started her artwork when she was 11 and she is the youngest artist at the gallery, which gives 25 percent of proceeds to a different charity every quarter. She uses computer software Procreate to create her digital artwork on her tablet.

The Hallmark and prime-time TV star, and her husband Rodney Peete, a radio talk show host/former NFL quarterback, created the HollyRod Foundation to spread the message of autism awareness and raise money for a myriad of programs.
During Autism Awareness Month in April, the foundation’s virtual programs are at the center of helping families, and Peete, a proud autism mom, says because the needs are so great, they will remain at the top of her priority list.

April is Autism Awareness Month, but some advocacy groups are moving away from awareness and instead pushing a new message of acceptance.
