 Mayo Clinic pediatric experts met on Wednesday, April 14, to discuss some questions that parents have surrounding COVID-19 vaccines for children under the age of 16.
Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse, pediatric infectious diseases expert at Mayo Clinic, and Dr. Joseph Poterucha, pediatric critical care specialist at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, led the discussion.
If children tend to be less likely to develop severe illnesses from COVID-19, why do we need to vaccinate them?
âWhile there have been relatively few, as compared to adults than children, who have needed to be hospitalized or who have died from this infection, there have been children who have died, over 300 in this country alone,â Rajapakse said.Â

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KEYC) The Mayo Clinic Health System says it is seeing more patients ranging in ages from their 30s through 50s testing positive for COVID-19 and hospitalized in Minnesota, including the southwest region of the state.
That’s why they encourage patients to consider an antibody infusion treatment.
Health officials say the monoclonal antibody infusion treatment can reduce the likelihood for a patient with the virus to develop severe symptoms that could lead to hospitalization
La Crosse Boys & Girls Club hosts COVID-19 vaccination clinic, others scheduled

The club is partnering with Mayo Clinic Health System to hold a handful of community vaccination clinics.
The first one happened Thursday at the Terry Erickson Club on the north side.
The clinics are open to anyone 16 and older in the community.
“It’s exciting, not only for our families, but to know that some of our older members can get their vaccine and having this activity going on at the club today with our friends at Mayo, it feels good,” said Boys & Girls Club CEO Jake Erickson.
