The Rainsville City Council is tackling beautification with plans to demolish unsafe buildings.
Councilman Rickey Byrum said there are 40-50 such structures throughout the town and it will take some time to clear them. He said it is important to prevent rodents that spread disease from inhabiting old structures belonging to absentee owners and areas overgrown with tress and tall grass. Following the passage of Resolution 02-18-2021(D), certified inspectors will test the unsafe buildings for asbestos and other banned materials so they can be safely burned.
âWeâve got to start somewhere,â Byrum said, proposing the resolution that passed unanimously.

LAKEWOOD, OH The city of Lakewood has again been named a 2020 Tree City USA.
The Arbor Day Foundation gives the Tree City designation to municipalities that demonstrate their support for urban forestry. Lakewood was cited for its health and management of its tree canopy. This is the 44th straight year Lakewood has received the distinction. Maintaining a healthy urban forest is important for both our environment and our citizens. Trees directly negate the effects of climate change and help to improve air quality, which are important considerations in an urban community like Lakewood. I also appreciate the value trees bring to make our neighborhoods more beautiful, encourage outdoor activity, and improve the mental health and overall well-being of our residents, Mayor Meghan George said.

Well, what does that mean? Here are the 4 requirements that need to be met before a town, city or municipality can apply for Tree City USA designation:
They must establish A Tree Board or Department and establish who will be taking care of the trees
There must be a Tree Care Ordinance in place. Essentially, there needs to be a tree plan in conjunction with the Tree Board that plans for care. maintenance and planting.
A Community Program with a solid annual budget. The Arbor Day Foundation, likes applicants to have a budget of at least $2 per capita, to make sure towns will continue to be dedicated to the trees.

The city parks department is exploring the idea of becoming a Bee City USA to promote pollinator gardens and possibly provide educational programs about bees.
City Parks Commission members want to know more, though, about the benefits of being a Bee City USA.
Commission Chair John Panezott said he knows the importance of bees, but if the commission is going to pay an annual registration fee of $200, “tell me what I’m going to get from them for my $200.”
Parks Director Shane Franks said two or three people approached him about the idea of Bee City USA, which is along the same lines as Tree City USA but with bees. He approached Salem Mayor John Berlin to see if there would be any issue with it and he said there wouldn’t be.
