Marion County Public Health COVID-19 Vaccinations Next Week

Marion County Public Health will hold four by appointment COVID-19 vaccine clinics next week. A first dose Moderna clinic will be held Wednesday, May 5th from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the department’s office in Knoxville. Those ages 18+ who live or work in Marion County are eligible. Proof of residence or employment is required. Second dose clinics will be held Tuesday, May 4th and Thursday, May 6th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the department’s office in Knoxville. The Pleasantville Fire Station will host a second dose clinic Wednesday, May 5th from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. Those eligible for second doses should receive text messages. National Infant Immunization Week Concludes

Today is the final day of National Infant Immunization Week. Marion County Public Health Nurse Judi Van Hulzen says that getting infants vaccinated remains critically important to their well-being. “Especially during this time, when COVID is around. We want to make sure folks are getting newborns and young children in there to get those shots. Even though COVID is out there, your doctor’s office is taking the utmost care to make sure there’s no communicable disease going on.” There are 14 diseases that infants generally are immunized against. Shots are typically spread out in intervals throughout the first four years of life. Most healthcare providers are able to administer these shots. A year ago, the coronavirus pandemic forced organizers to postpone the Run for the Roses from its traditional slot on the first Saturday in May until September 5. It was the race s first postponement since 1945 and when the Derby eventually went ahead it did so in front of desolately empty stands, as racing followed in the steps of the NBA and MLB and held events behind closed doors.

. As eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine opens up for all Hoosiers, those who identify as white and Asian are taking the lead in getting vaccinated while some minority groups are falling behind. According to the state’s vaccine dashboard, 6% of available vaccines have been claimed by those who identify as Black in Indiana. Data from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows just 22% of those who are Black have been vaccinated in the state.  While COVID-19 has affected all of the nation regardless of race, Black people are being hospitalized almost three times more than white people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
