Eight people are charged in Hennepin County District Court with a collective 46 counts of felony theft, with the admitted ringleader of the scheme – Trenea Deshawn Davis, 46, of Brooklyn Center –charged with 11 felony theft charges for crimes dating back to at least 2014.  “Minnesotans who receive Medical Assistance have a right to expect that they’ll receive all the care, dignity, and respect they’re entitled to. Minnesotans trying to afford their lives have a right to expect that every one of their tax dollars will be put to use properly, Ellison said in a statement. Derek Chauvin trial not impacted by 45-day hold on criminal trials By FOX 9 Staff MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - The murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd will not be impacted by an extended hold on jury trials in Minnesota announced Friday. Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie S. Gildea issued a statewide order effective February 1, 2021 that limits in-person activity in courthouses for an additional 45 days and keeps criminal jury trials on hold during that time. A court spokesperson confirmed to FOX 9 that Chauvin’s trial has an exception to that order. The Chauvin trial is scheduled to begin with jury selection on March 8. The proceedings will be streamed live at fox9.com/live.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the Minneapolis police officers who fired their weapons during a Jan. 14 shootout with a suspect. Zedrick Andrew Cooper, 36, was charged in Hennepin County District Court last week with three counts of first-degree assault and one count of ineligible possession of ammunition and a firearm following the brief chase that ended with the gunfight in north Minneapolis. Cooper was shot by police several times and wounded. Police have said he is expected to survive.

Judge denies motion to push back Derek Chauvin s trial By FOX 9 Staff MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Hennepin County District Court Judge Peter Cahill denied the state’s motion to push back the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged with George Floyd’s murder, due to public health concerns. Chauvin’s trial remains scheduled for March 8.  Earlier this week, prosecutors filed a motion asking Cahill to reconsider his ruling severing the trials of Chauvin and the other three former officers Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane charged in Floyd’s murder. They argued all four cases should be rejoined and one trial should be held later this summer.
