EAST ST. LOUIS A man found guilty of theft for allegedly obtaining control of a Granite City property by deception is suing the State Appellate Public Defender s office, alleging literally decades of delays in securing representation has affected his appeal of the verdict.
Jerry Yeager, Jr., individually and on behalf of others similarly situated, filed a complaint March 3 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois against Office of the State Appellate Defender, Thomas Breen, Carol Brook, James Brusatte and others in their official capacities as commissioners of the Board of the State Appellate Defender, alleging violation of the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. Yeager is represented by Thomas Maag of The Maag Law Firm LLC in Wood River.

EDWARDSVILLE A man is suing The City of Alton and others, claiming he was walking his dog when he fell into a hole under a water meter that had an unsecured lid.
Ayron Womack filed a complaint Feb. 19 in the Madison County Circuit Court against American Water Works Co., Inc., John Doe ad The City of Alton, alleging negligence.
Womack alleges in his complaint that while walking his dog along the sidewalk on Muny Vista Drive in Alton on April 14, 2020, he fell into a hole under the water meter that was owned and maintained by American Water.
He claims he suffered injuries to his ankle, foot and other parts of his body and has incurred medical treatment expenses.

On Feb. 18, Madison County Circuit Judge Sarah Smith granted plaintiff Brittany Nicole Hewitt’s request to file a sur-reply to the motion for summary judgment filed by defendants DBJ Automotive II, doing business as J.D. Byrider of Wood River, and DBJ Investments Inc., also known as CNAC of Wood River.
The 159-page document, filed through attorney David Duree of O’Fallon, included the discovery depositions of Joseph Dugan and Thomas Thomas III.
Dugan, who said he attempted to buy a house in Granite City with the plaintiff, testified about the circumstances surrounding the purchase of the vehicle at issue, the engine issues the vehicle had, and the consequences of Hewitt’s damaged credit score.
