Number of women cops in states/UTs up 16% in a year | India News

File image used for representation NEW DELHI: The strength of women personnel in state and Union Territory police forces registered a significant 16% jump last year, with their share rising to 10.3% as on January 1 this year (reflecting 2019 data) from 8.9% on January 1, 2019. Though the improvement is welcome, the cumulative percentage and numbers continue to reflect the male domination of police forces. Among the states, Bihar police covering civil police, district armed reserve, special armed police and India Reserve Battalions had the highest share of women personnel at 25.3%, followed by Himachal with 19.15%, Chandigarh with 18.78% and Tamil Nadu police with 18.5% women personnel. Overall, almost one-fifth of sanctioned positions for personnel in police forces across the country remain vacant.

West Zone districts saw decline in accidents, law and order cases in 2020: IG

Updated: Share Article AAA The West Zone of the Tamil Nadu Police saw a decline in road accidents and law and order cases this year in comparison with 2019, Inspector General of Police (West Zone) K. Periaiah said on Wednesday. West Zone comprises eight districts, namely Coimbatore, Tiruppur, the Nilgiris, Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. Mr. Periaiah said deaths due to road accidents had reduced this year by 19.55%, compared to the previous year. Only 1,675 road accident deaths were reported in 2020, as against 2,082 in 2019. Accident cases registered in the West Zone also saw a decline of 18.48%. While 12,619 cases were registered in 2019, only 10,286 were registered in 2020. However, there was an increase in the number of motor vehicle petty cases as 33,93,835 cases were registered and a fine of over ₹20.54 crore was collected.

NCB Bengaluru busts drug racket procured from Netherlands and Ethiopia Narcotic Control Bureau, Bengaluru zonal unit on Tuesday arrested two Nigerian nationals, including a woman, in Bengaluru on charges of drug peddling and 3,000 ecstasy pills and cocaine, received from the Netherlands and Ethiopia through postal parcel service. Acting on intelligence inputs NCB, seized 3000 Yellow and Grey coloured pills of MDMA (610 gms) from a parcel at Foreign Post Office, Bengaluru. “The consignment was concealed in layers of table cloth. The preliminary investigation revealed that MDMA was sourced from the Netherlands and destined to Bengaluru for further distribution,” NCB said in a statement.

Karnataka: Voting underway in 2,930 gram panchayats in first phase

Congress managed to win 48 while BJP won 37. (Representational) The first phase of election to the 3,019 Gram Panchayats in 117 taluks in Karnataka is underway with COVID-19 protocols. According to the election commission, there are 1,17,383 candidates in the fray for 48,048 seats. The voting began at 7.00 am and concludes at 5.00 pm. The State Election Commission had announced a two-phase poll to be held on December 22 and 27. In both phases, 2.96 crore electors will vote to elect 92,121 members for the gram panchayat. As many as 45,128 polling booths will be set up, and about 2.7 lakh polling officials will be deployed to oversee elections, election Commission said.
