The Kerala Nadi Samrakshana Samiti (All Kerala River Protection Committee) is organising a nature walk along Chalipuzha in the district on January 30 to “highlight the threat faced by the river owing to disaster management activities.”
It was barely a week ago that members of the Samiti paid a visit to Kodenchery where people from three wards along the the river had protested against the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) for converting the river into a canal by demolishing boulders and levelling the bottom of the river. A mock drill to check the emergency preparedness of various agencies engaged in ensuring safety was conducted successfully at the LNG terminal on Puthuvype island on Wednesday.
The drill was conducted under the aegis of the District Disaster Management Authority.
It said full coordination between the various agencies was achieved during the drill. The collectorate housed the central control centre, Elamkunnappuzha panchayat hosted the secondary coordination centre and the on-site control room was established at the LNG terminal itself. The drill started at 11 a. m. and was completed by 3 p.m.

The river was chosen for the purpose, from among the rivers in the State, for its treacherous rapids. However, with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) demolishing boulders and levelling the river, it is highly unlikely that the Chalippuzha will ever host the championship again.

New Delhi [India], January 14 (ANI): In view of the new strain of coronavirus in the United Kingdom, the Delhi government on Thursday extended guidelines for passengers coming from the UK to the national capital. To contain the increased transmissibility of new variant, it has been decided that aforesaid DDMA (District Disaster Management Authority) order dated January 8 may be further extended till January 31, Vijay Kumar Dev Chief Secretary of Delhi said in a letter.
The guidelines, which were valid till January 14, have now been extended till January 31.
