ALPENA A shortage of housing could weaken the local workforce and future development if people wanting to invest money and talent in Alpena can’t find places to live, Northeast Michigan business leaders say.
People trying to move to Alpena sometimes have to wait months to find a place to call their own, with housing demand exceeding supply or high prices for existing homes or new construction pricing some out of the market entirely, The News learned through weeks of research and interviews with homebuyers, sellers, and officials in real estate and economic development.

There are just a couple days left in the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and its Statewide Housing Plan Partner Advisory Council s housing survey.
It s the agency s first survey intended to identify housing issues with the goal of improving housing in Michigan for years to come. When we understand the barriers that individuals and families face in housing it becomes a lot easier to remove them and build a stronger foundation for the future, said Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, upon the survey s launch in March. An agreement has been finalized between Howell Township and developers for an apartment project that will include federally subsidized units.
At a special meeting Thursday, the township signed a $1.1 million purchase agreement with Union Development Holdings for an approximately 27-acre parcel located off of Oak Grove Road, behind Kroger. Called Union at Oak Grove, the proposed complex would include 220 units, 60% of which would be marked as âaffordable housingâ in accordance with Michigan State Housing Development Authority guidelines. Based on a renterâs income, those units could be priced as low as $661 per month.

MSHDA rolls out online application tool for COVID Emergency Rental Assistance

LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) has launched an online tool to help streamline the application process for renters and landlords seeking COVID Emergency Rental Assistance (CERA).
MSHDA currently has about $282 million in federal funds available to help tenants avoid eviction and landlords recoup owed rent. Another $340 million is available to be appropriated by the state legislature. No one should ever have to worry about losing their home, especially during a pandemic, said Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
