John Michael Huberty, 48, who runs his own downtown Anoka law practice, was given 20 days to respond. Notice that the Feb. 23 petition for disciplinary action has been served was admitted at the Supreme Court on March 8.
Huberty is subject to sanctions ranging from a simple reprimand to disbarment. The Supreme Court will ultimately decide what is appropriate.
He pleaded guilty to an amended felony count of third-degree sexual misconduct on Feb. 12, 2020, and was given a stayed prison sentence with five years’ probation. He also was ordered to spend 30 days in the Anoka County jail and complete 30 days’ work release.

An employee for the Fortune Bay Resort Casino in Tower, Minn., pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing more than $315,000 from the Indian Tribal Organization through a phony cash-refund scheme.
Jennifer Lynn Boutto, 32, worked as a front desk clerk at the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa-owned casino, a position that allowed her to give cash refunds to customers with little oversight. In 2013, Boutto started identifying high-roller patrons and issuing phony cash refunds against their invoices after they checked out, according to the plea agreement, filed in Minnesota U.S. District Court. Then she took the money from the casino vault and pocketed it.

A Lyon County man pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal misdemeanor for shooting an oil pipe in Cottonwood, Minn., resulting in a $1.1 million cleanup tab.
Tanner John Sik, 21, is charged in Minnesota U.S. District Court for negligent discharge of a pollution. On April 24, 2019, Sik and Eric Jay Weckwerth-Pineda drove out to bridge near Cottonwood Lake, which flows into the Yellow Medicine River, with several firearms in the back of a truck, according to Sik s plea.
Sik shot an AR-15 four times at a pipeline owned by Magellan Midstream Partners, hitting it and spilling at least 3,900 gallons of diesel fuel into the water, according to the plea. Sik and others noticed a visible sheen on the lake and reported it to authorities.

A former University of St. Thomas student who said anxiety to meet his parents high academic expectations motivated him to call in bomb threats on campus was sentenced to one year in federal prison Tuesday.
Federal Judge Eric C. Tostrud denied the defense s request for probation. Though Persaud planted no real bombs, Tostrud said, the St. Thomas community didn t know it was a hoax, and the fact that Persaud called in multiple threats shows the crime was not impulsive. Every call presented an opportunity to stop, he said.

A jury ruled on Thursday that the Anoka County jail held an immigrant woman longer than legally permissible after arresting her for driving without a license in 2017.
But the jury concluded that Myriam Parada did not suffer damages from jail staff reporting her to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, resulting in her being taken to ICE detention and setting into motion deportation procedures.
The decision marked the end of a four-day civil trial presided over by U.S. Chief Judge John R. Tunheim and the first federal trial that has been held entirely over Zoom in Minnesota to accommodate safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
