A former Gaston County prosecutor who handled some of the highest-profile cases will be the acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, including the cities of Gastonia, Shelby and Charlotte.
William T. Stetzer, who lives in Gaston County, fills in the federal prosecutor role following the departure of U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray on Feb. 28.
Stetzer was an assistant district attorney in Gaston County from 2007 to 2010, during which time he handled the most serious of cases, including homicides, violent assaults, sexual assaults and crimes against children.
Stetzer joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2018 and has since served as second-in-command to Murray as the first assistant United States attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Feb. 16 U.S. Attorney Andrew Murray, a veteran Charlotte attorney nominated by President Donald Trump to be Western North Carolina s top federal prosecutor, will leave the position by the end of the month.

Murray announced his departure from his post in the Western District of North Carolina in a statement Tuesday afternoon. His top assistant, Bill Stetzer of Charlotte, will serve as acting U.S. Attorney until a formal replacement is sworn in. CHARLOTTE, N.C. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were conducting a death investigation in north Charlotte in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood Friday afternoon. After further investigation police are saying a man s death has now been ruled a homicide.
Police responded to an assault with deadly weapon call for service around 3:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Lasalle Street. Officers arrived to the scene and located a GMC SUV that ran off the road and struck a tree. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.
She remembers the mangled metal, the mugshots, and what she considers to be a messy police investigation.
The officer had Conlon take the breathalyzer test multiple times because of technical issues, according to Lee. However, when the officer retrieved two printed results, Lee claims the officer tossed the result showing Conlon was below the legal limit. He kept only the result that indicated she violated the law.
“He technically threw out evidence,” recalled Keller.
“It was evidence that actually showed she was innocent,” Lee said.
Lee took that allegation to a meeting between the officer and the prosecutors from the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office.
