Swimmer injured in Perth bull shark attack | Sky News Australia

A man in his 50s has been attacked by a shark while swimming in Perth’s Swan River. The swimmer was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital via ambulance with a serious leg injury after he was bitten by a two to three metre bull shark. He was rescued by kayakers at Blackwall Reach at Bicton. Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan said the incident was “unexpected and surprising” as no one had been attacked by a bull shark in the river for 50 years, with the last fatality 100 years ago.

Border closures are more damaging to tourism than coronavirus fears

Australia s state border closures are crippling the tourism sector during the peak season and are causing more economic damage than people s fear of catching coronavirus, travel operators say.   In the two weeks over Christmas and New Year, tourism revenue was down $3billion compared with last year, according to study for the Transport and Tourism Forum released last week. The huge blow to businesses came after most states declared New South Wales a hotspot and banned travel from Greater Sydney due to an outbreak on the city s Northern Beaches.  Now every state and territory is following a different approach on borders, with New South Wales open to everyone and Western Australian premier Mark McGowan, who faces an election in March, banning residents from jurisdictions with a single Covid-19 case.

Mark McGowan accused of inflicting pain and suffering over border closure

John Barilaro has slammed Mark McGowan over his call for harsher Covid-19 restrictions in New South Wales and warned there will be more deaths by suicide than coronavirus. In a furious spray on morning radio, the New South Wales deputy premier told the Western Australia leader to stop lecturing his government on how to deal with the pandemic. Over the past few weeks, Mr McGowan has called for Sydney to go into lockdown to eliminate the spread of Covid-19 - but the NSW government is taking a balanced approach that factors in the economy and the mental well-being of citizens.
