The vaccine rollout was always going to slow down eventually but health officials were hoping enough people had received the vaccine to achieve herd immunity to COVID-19.
As of May 2, 32 percent of vaccine-eligible people in the U.S. have received both doses.
Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, toured the West Michigan Vaccine Clinic, a mass-vaccination site in downtown Grand Rapids, Monday.
He told reporters the federal government needs to back awareness campaigns at the local level to ensure the public has accurate information on the vaccines with the three currently being administered in the U.S. all considered safe and effective. We do have resources to make sure that we have public education campaigns for folks to see that the vaccine is safe, it is highly effective, Peters said. And we need to have folks get this vaccine for us to get to the other side.

The West Michigan Vaccine Clinic at DeVos Place is shutting down May 21, according to a statement from Kent County.
A joint statement released by Kent County Health Department, Spectrum Health and Mercy Health said the success of the vaccine clinic means large-scale administration is no longer required. The clinic will wind down services until officially shutting down later this month, and vaccine efforts will be directed toward smaller, community-based clinics where there is continued need.
“Kent County Health Department, Spectrum Health, Mercy Health and Vaccinate West Michigan are truly grateful and proud of so many partners that made the clinic possible and helped to sustain it for several months,” the partners said in a statement. “It adds up to thousands in our community that have played a significant and critical role in advocating for health, overcoming vaccine hesitancy and fighting COVID-19. GRAND RAPIDS, MI Gov. Gretchen Whitmer encouraged Michigan residents to keep up the fight against COVID-19 Thursday afternoon as she received her second dose of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine at the West Michigan Vaccine Clinic at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.
“As we keep ramping up our vaccinations, we can all see the light at the end of this tunnel,” she said. “It’s getting brighter. We’re still in the tunnel. We still have to be smart. We have to encourage our loved ones and neighbors and friends and coworkers to get vaccinated and keep wearing our masks. But we are getting closer to that normalcy that we all crave.”
