Morrisey warns of stimulus check scams | News, Sports, Jobs

Jan 6, 2021 CHARLESTON West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey warned consumers to beware of potential scams as they await their stimulus checks. The federal government is set to send stimulus checks to each household in coming days or weeks as part of a larger COVID-19 relief package. While many consumers eagerly await the money, it is imperative they watch for scams and protect sensitive information. “Many Americans are understandably anxious for their stimulus check to arrive,” Morrisey said. “Don’t be impatient and, in haste, fall for a scam. Consumers should take steps and carefully verify any unsolicited email, text message or phone call. This will help ensure that you do not lose money or personal, identifiable information.”

Morrisey fights effort to dissolve NRA | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 29, 2020 CHARLESTON West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey recently joined a 16-state coalition supporting the National Rifle Association’s lawsuit against New York’s attorney general. The coalition argues that New York’s attorney general unjustly seeks to dissolve the NRA, which is the country’s oldest civil rights organization and leading Second Amendment advocacy organization. “New York’s lawsuit seeks to destroy the Second Amendment,” Morrisey said. “West Virginia remains in fervent support of the Second Amendment. Our office will vigorously oppose any effort to roll back gun rights and attack those who cherish the freedom to bear arms.

Morrisey offers advice for last-minute gift card purchases | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 23, 2020 CHARLESTON West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey urged last-minute shoppers to exercise caution when they buy gift cards for Christmas. Thieves have been known to pilfer gift card racks. They will use handheld scanners to read the card’s magnetic information and any number on the front, after which they place the card back on display and wait for it to be activated. Once the unknowing recipient activates the card, the thief can create a counterfeit gift card and make online purchases without having the actual card in hand. “As we’re almost here at Christmas, there are a lot of people out there looking for stocking stuffers, and gift cards can be a great idea,” Morrisey said. “When you’re purchasing the card, make sure that you’re getting the full value on the card. Using a gift card is the equivalent of paying with cash, so it’s important to know you don’t get some of the same protections that purchasing with a credit card can provide.
