Police and emergency services responded to a two-vehicle collision on Sunday afternoon near Vavenby. Around 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 10, a northbound beige SUV collided with a black SUV headed south, 25 kilometres north of Vavenby on Highway 5, according to an RCMP press release. The driver of the beige vehicle, a man from Alberta, was reportedly airlifted to hospital with critical injuries. The occupants of the black SUV were injured but considered non-life-threatening. One of the several dogs in the black vehicle, however, died in the crash and one was injured as well. Road conditions are said to have not been contributing factors, but investigators have stated that they have obtained evidence of impaired driving by alcohol and drugs from the driver of the beige SUV.
