Grocery store, planned new apartments offer hope near Westland Mall

What was formerly acres of blighted and abandoned apartments are now going to be home to a small and affordable apartment development. But whether it s a harbinger of better things ahead for the area near Westland Mall remains unclear. Woda Cooper Companies plans to build 60 affordable apartments for senior residents near the Havenwood Townhomes site, which sits just west of and across Georgesville Road from Hollywood Casino Columbus near Westland Mall. The apartments are being built in Prairie Township on former Franklin County land bank parcels. The land bank tore down about 40 blighted apartment buildings totaling 760 units, said Curtiss Williams, president and CEO of the land bank known as the Central Ohio Community Improvement Corporation.

COTA Restores Express Routes For Commuters

A COTA bus in downtown Columbus in May 2020. The Central Ohio Transit Authority restored some services on Monday as more commuters head back to workplaces. COTA buses will pick up passengers again on 14 express routes covering a wide area around Central Ohio. The transit agency will also add weekend trips from downtown Columbus to the Columbus Zoo starting May 8 and 9. Daily “Zoo Bus” service will begin May 31 and run through Labor Day. COTA officials said ridership is down more than 50% since the COVID-pandemic started last March. COTA says service will not be restored yet for the AirConnect route between Downtown and John Glenn Columbus International Airport since business travel has not recovered.

COTA now offering free rides to COVID vaccine sites for those in need

Updated: 12:55 PM EDT April 7, 2021 COLUMBUS, Ohio The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is making transportation one less thing people need to worry about when it comes to getting the COVID-19 vaccine.  COTA announced Wednesday it will now offer free rides to Central Ohioans who have a scheduled vaccine appointment, but no way to get there.  In an effort to make the vaccine more accessible to underserved communities, COTA has delivered more than 10,000 one-day transit passes to roughly 30 non-profit organizations throughout Columbus and surrounding areas.  Additionally, COTA said it will offer free rides to those who have a scheduled vaccine appointment at St. John Arena.
