(Courtesy of Beer Creek Brewing Company) An India Pale Ale made with 100% New Mexico ingredients will soon benefit a volunteer fire department. Beer Creek Brewing Co. has brewed up Get to da Hoppa IPA. A portion of the proceeds will go toward the Turquoise Trail Fire Department. The beer will be released on May 14 and will only be available at the brewery, at 3810 N.M. 14 in Santa Fe. “So the Chinook hop is what we use in that beer,” Beer Creek co-owner Rich Headley said. “And it’s also the name of the helicopter, the Chinook helicopter, which they use to fight fires. And it’s also what Arnold Schwarzenegger said in ‘Predator’ was ‘Get to the choppa.’ And so it’s Get to da Hoppa. It’s really kind of fun.”

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... The pandemic has changed everything. The world as we knew it will never be the same. In my opinion the future will bring great opportunity to thrive in the “next normal.” The time to act is now. If we don’t, the all-too-familiar story will prevail and we will again ask, “Why is New Mexico last on good lists and first on bad lists?” I’ve often referred to New Mexico as the “hole-in-the-donut” state compared to neighboring states Texas, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. These four all have prospered and grown with higher per capita incomes and lower unemployment rates and poverty rates, while New Mexico has struggled and literally been the hole in the donut.

Grad has enough Independence to overcome medical issues

Grad has enough Independence to overcome medical issues Independence High School math teacher Suzie Sittig congratulates senior Adrian Lopez on May 20, after he snagged his diploma at the school. Photo by Gary Herron. It really wasn’t that long ago that Adrian Lopez was happily attending Rio Rancho High School, enjoying being part of the DECA program and, basically, enjoying a normal teen’s life. In late 2018, though, his life took a turn for the worse. Spoiler alert: Lopez was among the 67 graduates of Independence High School this month. But there was a time less than two years ago that he was told if he hadn’t gone to a medical professional, he could have wound up with serious consequences.
