Taipei, May 16 (CNA) Taiwan on Sunday confirmed 207 new cases of COVID-19, of which 206 were classified as domestic infections, the highest number ever recorded in the country in a single day since the pandemic began.
The new domestic cases are 90 males and 116 females, ranging from under 5 years of age to over 80 years old, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said.

Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) yesterday called for Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) to take over as head of the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
Many experts have suggested that the CECC should adjust its organizational structure and be divided into three groups outbreak, treatment and vaccination to free up Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the center, to focus on disease prevention efforts, Chiang wrote on Facebook.
Urging an upgrade of the CECC, he said that Su should take over as commander of the center and coordinate efforts across government agencies.
Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) strongly urged everyone to thoroughly practice the “new disease prevention lifestyle” and avoid unnecessary outings and gatherings, as the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) confirmed 206 new local COVID-19 cases yesterday.
The local cases include 90 males and 116 females, aged from under five years old to older than 80, he said, adding that the onset of symptoms or their testing dates were between April 6 and Saturday.
They include 97 New Taipei City residents, 89 Taipei residents, nine from Changhua County, three each in Yilan County and Hsinchu County, two each in Taoyuan

Taipei, May 16 (CNA) The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) has received reports of scammers pretending to be from local health authorities in order to obtain people s personal information, officials said Sunday.
The telephone scammers ask people to provide their personal information under the pretense of conducting contact tracing of COVID-19 cases, Deputy Interior Minister Chen Tsung-yen (陳宗彥), also a deputy CECC commander, said at a press conference.
Chen said the Criminal Investigation Bureau is investigating the scams and he urged people to be aware of them.
Taiwan introduces control measures amid spike in local COVID-19 cases

Taipei, May 16 (CNA) Taiwan on Sunday rolled out a slew of COVID-19 control measures for medical institutions amid the country s surging domestic infections of the virus, including lowering hospital outpatient intake and ordering patients to have a test for the virus before being hospitalized.
The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) has ordered hospitals across the nation to reduce their outpatient intake by deferring outpatient services that are deemed not imminent, such as health checks and cosmetic surgery, CECC advisor Chang Shan-chwen (張上淳) said Sunday at a press briefing.
