The board will begin at 6 p.m. in closed session to conference with labor negotiators. In open session at 7 p.m., the board will honor 47 district employees in honor of “classified school employees week” and “day of the teacher,” hold a public hearing on a request to rename the Yucca Valley High School lecture hall in honor of the late John W. Frakes Jr., discuss potential funding for the school facility modernization program, and revise the district’s English learner master plan. The meeting will be held via YouTube Live from the official MUSD YouTube page.
Registration is now open for all MUSD students for summer school programs for enrolled students TK to 12th grade on a first come, first served basis. The program will be largely a learning opportunity that focuses on socialization, fun, and hands-on projects and activities at the elementary level. Grade level focus skills will also be part of the summer school day to assist with mastery of grade level skills in English and math. Themed weeks have been determined by each site, and students may decide to attend some weeks and not others at the elementary level. At the high school level credit recovery is an option, as well as the earning of original credit for some elective courses. Students must attend every day to earn credit unlike the elementary program; however, an enrichment program will be offered for no credit for the purpose of allowing for socialization and fun for secondary students. At last night’s meeting, the board approved a one-year contract from 2021-2022 for Interim Superintendent Doug Weller with an annual salary of nearly $200,000. Director of Elementary Curriculum Julie Howard announced that all district students in transitional kindergarten through sixth grades will receive free backpacks on the last week of school filled with educational resources and parent-student activities to keep students learning through the summer. Assistant Superintendent Amy Woods announced that the nutritional services department has distributed 3 million meals to students and their families since the beginning of the pandemic.
