A person suspected of driving under the influence in Santa Monica last weekend crashed into an outdoor dining area on Main Street, sending diners fleeing and injuring several people. The 8 p.m. Friday crash happened directly in front of the busy Urth Caffe, when the alleged 21-year-old driver ran into a heavy K-rail protecting the outdoor seating area there, per ABC7. The crash scattered diners and tables alike, and multiple people were injured including one who was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
While car crashes are sadly nothing new to patio seating at restaurants and street food stands around greater Los Angeles, they have taken on increased significance during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic because of outdoor-only seating requirements. Before Twitter existed, we could pretend our politicians, who although they clearly always have had their faults, were people who had empathy for their fellow citizens.
Twitter proved how wrong we were. Turns out, plenty of politicians are jerks who would much rather glibly hit send on a tweet that would allow their fellow jerks to have a dark laugh than show an ounce of compassion.
