It was a stellar year when it came to Vernon Parish football as all three teams reached the playoffs.
Now, three Vernon Parish athletes have received a little more recognition.
The Rosepine duo of Ethan Frey and Grant Ducote, along with Pickering s DeShawn Jackson, were named honorable mention on the Class 2A all-state football team as selected by a panel of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Frey, an LSU baseball commit, adds to his already loaded awards cabinet with this honor. He was a first-team all-district selection at quarterback for the Eagles, along with being the District 5-2A Offensive MVP. He recently won Offensive Player of the Year award from the BWS Sports all-Vernon Parish team.
For the second time in the young 2020-2021 college basketball season, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association has honored a member of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns with a weekly honor.
Louisiana senior guard Cedric Russell was tabbed the LSWA Men s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.
Earlier this season, UL junior forward Theo Akwuba won the honor.
The weekly award is voted on by the state s sports information directors along with select members of the media.
A native of Alexandria, Louisiana, Russell helped the Cajuns extend their win streak to six games while improving its record to 6-1 on the season after posting a pair of 10-point victories over the New Orleans Privateers and the McNeese Cowboys.

NATCHITOCHES – The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame will induct a trio of sports journalism icons next summer.
The trio’s selection was announced Wednesday by LSWA president Raymond Partsch III.
“The most phenomenal aspect of this trio of DSA honorees is not the hundreds of awards they have been bestowed with over the decades of service or their reputation as respected journalists,” Partsch said. “For me, it is the years of unselfish dedication to sports and sports media here in the state of Louisiana that stands out.
