Adventist Organizations Join Forces to Assist Pandemic-Ravaged India, Brazil

In a May 4, 2021 action, the Administrative Committee of the General Conference (GC-ADCOM) voted to release contingency funds and ramp up the coordination of efforts by various church organizations to assist those two pandemic-ravaged nations. Adventist leaders explained that several church organizations have already been assisting many countries affected by the lingering COVID-19 pandemic. ADRA in India has launched several projects in partnership with the Seventh-day Adventist Church health system in India. “Initial estimates in financial support, program strengthening, and in-kind, totals about US$250,000,” they reported. Since the pandemic began, the ADRA COVID-19 response in India has totaled more than $1,210,000, with another $1,000,000 expected in the coming weeks.

Obamacare Gave More Breast Cancer Survivors Access to Breast Reconstruction (Image: iStock.com/Tagore75) A new study was presented at an online meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons on April 29 found that breast reconstruction disparities improved dramatically with Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act. Findings also revealed that there were significant increases in breast reconstruction among non-Hispanic Black women, sometimes even achieving higher rates than surgeries of non-Hispanic white women. According to the meeting, the study also found significant growth in reconstruction rates among women with lower income and education levels, during the same time period. “The timeline for broadening Medicaid qualification criteria, providing coverage to those who had previously been uninsured, corresponded directly with the timeline for mitigation of breast reconstruction disparities in race, income and education,” Sharon Lum, MD, Loma Linda University Heal

According to Ramiz Fargo, MD, medical director for the Sleep Disorders Center and a sleep medicine physician at Loma Linda University Health, there isn’t existing research to support that sleeping on the floor can be beneficial and anecdotal evidence is varied. “Some people say the firm support of the floor relieves their back pain, but you also run the risk of worsening pain without proper support,” he says.
