Vermont Business Magazine Vermont Department of Corrections (Vermont DOC) is reporting a Covid-19 outbreak at Northern State Correctional Facility (NSCF) in Newport after one staff member and 21 incarcerated individuals tested positive for the virus. The 22 total cases were detected in testing conducted February 23, 2021.
The facility was placed in full lockdown upon receipt of the positive results on February 25. Contact tracing is underway, and Vermont DOC and Vermont Health Department’s Rapid Response Team are outlining follow-up actions and testing.
In addition to the cases at NSCF, a staff member from Middlebury Probation and Parole (MIPP) also tested positive on February 23. As of Friday, a total of six staff and 30 incarcerated individuals are positive for the virus.

Official: Prison fight leaves 1 inmate dead, 2 injured

MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (AP) A fight at Northeast Correctional Complex in Tennessee left one inmate dead and injured two others, authorities said.
The fight broke out Sunday night in a housing unit at the prison in Mountain City, the Johnson City Press reported. Several inmates were involved in the fight, said Robert Reburn, a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Correction. Three inmates were transported for treatment and one later died, Reburn said.

Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Correction are investigating what happened, he said.
MOUNTAIN CITY â One prisoner died from injuries suffered in a fight that broke out in a housing unit at Northeast Correctional Complex on Sunday evening.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Department of Correction investigators are looking into the incident, according to Robert Reburn, East Tennessee public information officer for the Tennessee Department of Correction.
Reburn said the identity of the victim and the other inmates involved in the altercation have not yet been released. He said the investigation is continuing.
Reburn said several inmates were involved in the fight and that three were transported for treatment of their injuries. One of the three later died from his injuries.
COVID-19: Fifth resident dies in Sullivan County nursing home outbreak

UNITY A fifth resident of the Sullivan County nursing home has died after testing positive for COVID-19 during an ongoing outbreak at the facility, according to the administrator.
A total of 128 people have tested positive during the outbreak at the Unity nursing home, including 82 residents and 46 workers, 30 of whom have recovered and returned to work, facility administrator Ted Purdy said in a Thursday email.
Nearby, an outbreak at the Sullivan County Department of Corrections included a total of 45 cases, including 33 inmates and 12 employees as of Thursday, County Manager Derek Ferland said in an email. Six employees and six inmates have recovered.
