Tornado activity in the region of the US known as Tornado Alley was at near-record low levels in April. Not even a dozen tornadoes were reported in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska during the month of April. This accounts for just 16% of all April, preliminary tornadoes in the US, instead of the average of 28%. Only the year 2018 had lower tornado activity since 2000, according to the Storm Prediction Center database.

Texans cannot tolerate resurgence of voter suppression

On May 7, House Bill 6, or HB 6, passed along partisan lines in the Texas House of Representatives by a margin of 78-64. HB 6 is complementary to the recently passed Senate Bill 7, or SB 7. These bills have come under heavy scrutiny for adding new impediments to voting accessibility in Texas.  Texas is already ranked as the most restrictive state for voting in the United States in an analysis done by Northern Illinois University. Tx Elects reported that Texas also ranks as the fifth worst state for voter turnout, up from third worst in past elections. You’d think reducing the number of voters would be the last thing our state wants.

Illinois Professor Researches Severe Weather Forecasts

WBGZ Radio 5/10/2021 | By Scot Bertram - Illinois Radio Network A professor at Northern Illinois University has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to continue his research into severe weather forecasts. The $475,000 award will be used mainly to support student researchers assisting on a project to improve long-range predictions of storms that are capable of producing tornadoes and hail. Victor Gensini, associate professor and Deputy Director of the NIU Center for Research Computing and Data, believes his model could forecast tornado and hail-producing storms at least two weeks in advance. “To get the federal funding for a research group is enormous, as it promotes science that s really going to get out and benefit society,” Gensini said. “This is the culmination of ten years of grant proposal writing.”
