Bessemer City woman killed in crash on N C 161

A Bessemer City woman was killed in a two-car crash in Kings Mountain Saturday afternoon.  According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Joy Johnson, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene following a head on collision on N.C. 161 just north of Velvet Drive.  Troopers indicated the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. Saturday after Johnson, driving north in a 2005 Buick passenger car, crossed the center line and collided with a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.  Johnson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to troopers.  Multiple occupants of the Malibu were transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, according to Trooper Ray Pierce.

Man dies after driving into Cherryville pond

A 90-year-old Cherryville man died Wednesday night after driving his car into a pond near the intersection of Cherryville Highway and Mount Zion Church Road.  According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Gerald Clontz Parker attempted to turn left from Mt. Zion Church Road onto Cherryville Highway around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday. Troopers say Parker may have then attempted to reverse his direction which sent his 2019 Hyundai Sonata off the road and into a pond.  The car floated to the center of the pond, according to Trooper Ray Pierce. A bystander saw the crash and attempted to reach Parker, Pierce said, but the car soon sank. 

Tim Howell: North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper dies after battle with COVID-19

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is mourning a death in their unit from the coronavirus. First Sergeant Timothy Lee Howell died after what was described as a lengthy battle with COVID-19 on Thursday. Howell was part of Troop A, serving northeastern North Carolina. Howell died at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. A Facebook post from the NCSHP said he was supported by his loving family.

Snow Hill man in custody for allegedly robbing First Flight in Kinston

Snow Hill man in custody for allegedly robbing First Flight in Kinston A Snow Hill man is in custody after allegedly robbing a bank in Kinston on Monday morning.  According to the Kinston Police Department s Facebook page, 42-year-old Joseph Cecil Gardner Jr., who resides on Central Avenue in Snow Hill, was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 5, for his alleged involvement in the robbery of the First Flight Federal Credit Union Monday morning at 9:33 a.m.  KPD Maj. Jenee Spencer said Monday s suspect left the scene with an undetermined amount of money before officers arrived at the bank. Officers pulled camera footage from multiple locations, showing what appeared to be the suspect holding a handgun covered by a cloth inside the bank. They determined Gardner was the suspect and was driving a silver 2014 Buick SUV. Warrants were obtained on Gardner for robbery with a dangerous weapon.
