DeKALB – The DeKalb Fire Department saw a decrease in the number of calls for emergency services in 2020 due to COVID-19, Fire Chief Jeff McMaster said at Monday’s City Council meeting.
McMaster presented the annual report for 2020 for the DeKalb Fire Department at Monday’s meeting. He said members of the DeKalb Fire Department were fully committed to serving the community in 2020, which was a “mysterious and challenging time.”
“Twenty-twenty was a year that everybody will remember, and at times, want to forget,” McMaster said. “What was remarkable about 2020 was how our community rallied around each other from every angle.”

The Egyptian Theater, 135 N. Second St., is holding a fundraiser to replace the current seats at the theater, which are over 80 years old. The current seats have old and malfunctioning mechanics to go along with a less than ideal comfort level for patrons.
DeKALB – The Egyptian Theatre will be hosting a “Save the Clock” fundraising event for the DeKalb Rotary Club at 7 p.m. May 15. The event, which features a showing of “Back to the Future” to help the DeKalb Rotary Club restore the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Clock that is located downtown.
The Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. 2nd Street, works with many service and nonprofit organizations throughout the year. The event this Saturday will include a showing of “Back to the Future,” a costume contest, trivia contest and 50/50 drawing. The film “Back to the Future” was selected by the DeKalb Rotary Club.

DeKALB – The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce has begun its annual “Restaurant Week,” happening now until May 1.
Participating restaurants include a total of 19 in the DeKalb/Sycamore area, according to the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce website. The restaurants are offering up to four special menu items or a percentage off of your bill upon the mention of Restaurant Week.
Sycamore Tom and Jerry’s, at 1670 DeKalb Ave., is one of the participating restaurants. General Manager Sarah Meyer said the Chamber of Commerce likes to organize this week-long event every spring “to promote restaurants in the Sycamore/DeKalb area and remind people to dine in the area.”

DeKALB – After a series of unresolved code violations, the City of DeKalb and Hunter Properties have reached a tentative agreement which will include a change of ownership of four complexes owned by Hunter Properties.
In the agreement, Hunter Properties is to sell Hunter Ridgebrook, 808-832 Ridge Drive and 832 Edgebrook Drive, Hunter Tri-Frat, 930-934 Greenbrier Road and 1024 W. Hillcrest Drive, Lincoln Tower, 1100 W. Lincoln Highway, and Hunter Hillcrest, 1011-1027 Hillcrest Drive, within 3 ½ years.
Marcus & Millichap and Triad Real Estate Partners are currently listed to sell the properties, according to the agreement.
DeKalb City Attorney Matthew Rose said there’s no current buyer for the properties. The agreement obligates Hunter Properties to provide certain services that should improve the quality of living conditions to people that live there, he added.
