Dear Supporter and Donor: Don’t send us any money. If you do send money, we will do our best to put it to good use, and there are always good uses for money, but to be honest, when we look around, we see that others need it so much more than we do.
Your alma mater does not have an endowment like Harvard’s, but so many other institutions are struggling more than we are. Small institutions, particularly Historically Black Colleges and Universities and little liberal arts colleges, are working hard to survive. Each has people who love it and want to see it succeed, but in this day and age, the numbers work better for big schools. So you might look around and find one of those schools that can capture your heart and adopt it.

SAVANNAH, Ga. â Savannah State University will be represented by Doerun native Denerick Simpson for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.Â
Simpson is the son of Larry Simpson of Moultrie and Wendy King Hayes of Doerun.Â
Simpson was chosen to be a White House Competitiveness Scholar for 2020-2021. As the highest student recognition program, competitiveness scholars are chosen for their academic achievements, campus and civic engagement and entrepreneurial ethos or âgo-getterâ spirits. In addition, each recognized scholar is nominated and endorsed by their institutionâs president, which in itself is a prestigious acknowledgement. It is my privilege to congratulate the HBCU Competitiveness Scholars Class of 2020-2021 on their outstanding academic achievement, community leadership, and entrepreneurial spirit, said U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are seeing an increased amount of donations over the past year. The rise in funds is believed to be a result of the George Floyd murder as well as other factors.
NPR reported: “The nation’s largest HBCU is having a blockbuster year for fundraising. North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro has raised $88 million since its fiscal year began last summer. That’s almost six times what the university typically fundraises annually and the fiscal year isn’t even over yet.”
Todd Simmons, the vice chancellor for the HBCU, said: “There has not been a year like that ever in our history.”

addition to recounting the policy successes of his first three
months in office, President Biden used his bully pulpit to
introduce and call for the passage of the American Families Plan.
The American Families Plan is a $1.8 trillion package that will
reshape multiple elements of the economy. In combination with the
$2 trillion American Jobs Plan introduced a few weeks ago,
President Biden is asking Congress to provide $4 trillion in new
spending and tax code changes he argues will make the United States
