A total of 82,652 tests have been completed to date, an increase of 393 from Tuesday.

Some Northeastern Ontario health units start receiving Moderna COVID-19 vaccines

Some Northeastern Ontario health units have received the first shipments of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.  Today, the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit and Timiskaming Health Unit received vaccines, and Public Health Sudbury & Districts said it s expecting to receive vaccines in the coming weeks. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and area, is slated to give an update on the program tomorrow. There is still no word on when Algoma Public Health will release COVID-19 vaccines. Public Health Sudbury & Districts said today that the much-anticipated vaccination program for residents of long-term care and high-risk retirement homes will begin this week.

That brings to 187 the total number of cases in this health unit’s region since the pandemic was declared in March. Of those, 109 have been in Nipissing and 78 in Parry Sound. There are now four active cases in the region. Three are in Parry Sound District, one in Nipissing. All four are isolating. None are currently in hospital.

No one is currently in hospital. To date, there have been 186 cases of COVID-19 in the region, including 109 in Nipissing District and 77, including one death, in Parry Sound District. A total of 80,707 tests have been completed to date. As of Sunday, Ontario had 255,002 confirmed cases (24,153 active, 225,046 resolved, 5,803 deaths). There were 2,417 new cases Sunday from 48,947 completed tests, for a positivity rate of 4.9 per cent. The rate of active cases was 165.81 per 100,000 people. Over the previous seven days, there were 17,216 new cases. The seven-day rolling average of new cases was 2,459.

The health unit says it has been in contact with long-term care homes to start the immunization process. It is anticipated to have all long-term care home residents and elder care residents of First Nations communities immunized by the provincial deadline of Feb. 5.
