Hartford Courant. Alden is known for buying distressed assets like newspapers and making painful cuts to them. The basic playbook: Sell off any assets like real estate, raise subscription prices, then manage to an expected decline in revenue by taking a meat ax to staff and resources.
One bright spot in the grim news is the
Baltimore Sun, which will be owned by a nonprofit instead. Associated Baltimore Sun Media titles, including Annapolis’ Capital Gazette, will also be owned by the Sunlight for All Institute, a nonprofit established by Stewart Bainum, the chairman of Choice Hotels, who lives in Takoma Park.

When White House press secretary Jen Psaki gave her first briefing on January 20, she said she possessed “deep respect for the role of a free and independent press in our democracy and for the role all of you play.” Even when the administration didn’t appreciate examination, she said, “we have a common goal, which is sharing accurate information with the American people.”
That goal apparently does not apply when the press asks about Psaki’s staffers dating a journalist who covers the administration.
As Caleb Ecarma reports in
Vanity Fair, Psaki’s deputy TJ Ducklo threatened Politico reporter Tara Palmeri when she looked into his relationship with Axios reporter Alexi McCammond. Ducklo, Ecarma writes, “tried to intimidate Palmeri by phone in an effort to kill the story,” threatening her by saying ” “I will destroy you,” and accused her of being jealous that 1) “an unidentified man in the past had ‘wanted to fuck’ McCammond

Donald Trump’s last impeachment trial began in the US Senate on January 21, 2020, which doesn’t quite feel like 386 days ago, does it? Since then, Trump lost his job, a global pandemic shut down much of Washington life (and life in general), and a big hunk of this town is now a security zone thanks to the January 6 attack on the Capitol from a pro-Trump mob. When we look back at coverage of Trump’s 2020 impeachment trial, it’s almost as if it took place in a different city maybe a different universe. Here are some of the ways DC has changed.
